Professor Richard SJ Clarke BSc MD PhD FFARCS FFARCSI (1929-2023)
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Professor Richard Clarke on December 6th of 2023. Professor Clarke was a former Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists RCSI from 1991-4 and was Chair of the Faculty’s Education Committee for many years. He was a very distinguished researcher, publishing more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, mainly in the fields of physiology and anaesthesiology. As a clinician, he worked as a consultant anaesthesiologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, mainly in cardio-thoracic anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. After his retirement, he remained academically active and produced The Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast: A History (1797-2007).
He will be remembered with great admiration and affection by his many friends and colleagues in Ireland and elsewhere. May he Rest in Peace.
