Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Hospital, Boston MA/College of Anaesthesiologists of
Ireland Advanced Clinical Fellowship Programme in Anaesthesiology.
Abbrev: DACCPM: Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. CAI: College of
Anaesthesiologists of Ireland.

December 2023

Overall intent.
i. The programme is intended to provide anaesthesiologists who have recently completed the College
of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI) National Training Programme with an opportunity to learn, train
and practice in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Massachusetts General
Hospital in Boston MA. Fellows will experience clinical, academic, and cultural aspects of a leading
Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine and at the hospital in which modern
anaesthesia was first demonstrated in 1846.
ii. The DACCPM at MGH will add to the diversity of its clinical community and continue its tradition of
incorporating good ideas and practices from around the world through appointment of Fellows and
junior faculty who have graduated from non-US medical schools and training programmes.
iii. To develop over time a substantial and mutually beneficial relationship between the DACCPM, MGH
and the CAI.
Outline.
That 1-2 Fellows per annum who have recently graduated (within three years of the date of
application) from the Irish National Training Programme will take up 1–2-year Fellowship posts with
the DACC at MGH.
To be eligible, an applicant to this Fellowship will
i. have graduated from the CAI National Training Programme within three years of the date of
application
ii. meet all the requirements to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts. Specifically, this will
require that the applicant holds a current “pass” in the three step US Medical Licensing Examinations
or meets the US immigration criteria for renown at a national level (see Appendix A for indicative
items). Priority will be given to applicants who currently hold a “pass” in the USMLEs. The process of
securing a temporary Massachusetts Medical License and US work visa can take 7- 12 months from
the time the selected Fellow makes an application. The final arbiter of whether the criteria for national
renown are met is the US Immigration.

The CAI will advertise for applications and, in cooperation with the MGH DACCPM, hold a competition
to select those to whom offers of this Fellowship will be made. The competition will comprise two
stages: 1. evaluation of CV and personal statement (less than 1500 words) including an account of the
motivation for applying; and 2. interview of shortlisted candidates. As many as two Fellows for each
year will be offered Fellowships (subject to subsequent approval of US immigration for those whose
application is based on the “national renown” criteria). Based on their ranking in the competition,
other applicants may also be made offers in the event that the highest ranked applicants do not take
up the initial offers made.

Appointed Fellows will be affiliated with Harvard Medical School at the Instructor level.

The Fellowship: The successful candidate will join the MGH DACCPM as a junior faculty member. The
clinical disciplines included may be drawn from all anaesthesiology subdisciplines except cardiac
anaesthesiology, critical care and (chronic) pain medicine.
The Fellow will input into the distribution of clinical exposure over the course of the Fellowship.
His/her clinical responsibilities will include the conduct of anaesthesia as well as the supervision of
residents and nurse anaesthetists. The Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in non-clinical
activities including resident education (the department has approximately 75 residents and offers an
array of educational activities including didactics, journal clubs, workshops), clinical research, and
quality improvement/quality assurance programs. The MGH DACCPM will also work with the
candidate to provide exposure to the clinical and non-clinical experiences that are in line with their
career goals.
Satisfactory completion of each Fellowship will be certified jointly by the Harvard Hospitals Anesthesia
Program and the CAI. These Fellowships will not be ACGME accredited.

Scale and term: The term of this arrangement is the period 2021 – 2026 in the first instance; Fellows
appointed based on this understanding will take up post no earlier than July 2022. No more than two
Fellows will be appointed per annum and normally Fellows will take up post in July or August. Based
on the discussion between the Fellow and the DACCPM, the term of the Fellowship will be either one
or two years. The first competition (to be held in October/ November 2021) may result in offers for
2022 and 2023.

Designated programme leads for MGH DACC and CAI will review the programme and Fellow’s progress
annually. During 2025, MGH DACC and CAI nominees will jointly review the programme overall and
bring recommendations to their respective executives.
