World Patient Safety Day 2025
The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland is proud to mark World Patient Safety day and align our activities with this year’s World Health Organization theme: “Patient safety from the start!”. Patient safety starts with vigilance and this is reflected in the College of Anaesthesiologists motto, Salus Dom Vigilamus, Safety while we watch, reflecting the ever present Anaesthesiologist caring for their patient.
This year’s unique focus is on ensuring safe care for newborns and children; something which resonates strongly with our College’s mission to safeguard patients across every stage of their healthcare journey.
This year, we are delighted to highlight the Operation Preparation podcast as a centrepiece of our celebrations. Produced in collaboration with our colleagues in the St James Hospital, Dublin, this innovative podcast series guides patients and their families through the surgical pathway—explaining what to expect before an operation, clarifying fasting requirements, describing anaesthetic techniques, and offering practical advice on recovery.
For anaesthesiologists, preparation is fundamental to safety. The Operation Preparation podcast empowers patients by demystifying complex medical processes and placing knowledge directly in their hands. By doing so, it supports one of the key aims of the WHO’s 2025 campaign: engaging patients, families, and clinicians in partnership.
By placing Operation Preparation at the heart of our 2025 celebrations, the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland reaffirms its commitment to advancing patient safety through education, collaboration, and innovation. Together with our partners in the wider health service, we strive to ensure that patient safety truly begins from the start.
