Overseas Strategy

The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland has along history of conducting examinations in the Middle East and in more recent years has undertaken development work in Africa. As part of the College’s strategic plan, it is intended to further develop those over seas links and establish long term relationships with various Ministries of Health and Postgraduate Training Bodies.

In 2012, the College intends holding its Primary FCAI Multiple Choice examinations in Oman, Jordan and

Malaysia. This will identify how strong the demand is for the College examinations. In association with the exams it is hoped that other educational activities will take place and in some cases that Trainees from these centers will do a part of their training in Ireland.  Memorandum of Understanding are now being drawn up for signing with the following:

Omani Medical & Specialty Board

University of Jordan

Perdana University, Malaysia

In conjunction with the above activity, the College is also active in Malawi since 2008. Since that time, the College of Anaesthesiologists in partnership with the College of Medicine in Blantyre has established and supported a project in the Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre, Blantyre and Kamuzu Central Hospital Lilongwe to develop a group of clinical officer and nurse trainers skilled in assessment, resuscitation and management of mothers and trauma victims in Thyolo and Chinadzulu Hospitals and nearby district. This Project is being funded by Irish Aid and the College.
