CAI Statement Condemning Targeting of Healthcare Professionals and Facilities and all Violent Conflict.

The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland, as a community of doctors, wishes to convey our horror at the brutal violence evident in many conflict zones and our abhorrence at the emergence of destructive and deadly attacks on healthcare infrastructure and healthcare professionals as they serve people in need, especially in Gaza and Ukraine.

Being committed to human healthcare and respect for human life, we condemn the targeting of healthcare and humanitarian workers, and their desperate patients, in the act of administering or receiving essential medical assistance. Nothing can justify attacks on healthcare facilities and professionals serving people in need, including innocent children, who have, unconscionably, been killed or horrifically injured in such appalling numbers.

We support and commend our government’s ongoing advocacy for immediate ceasefires, peace, humanitarian aid and reconstruction of medical services, in tandem with  international efforts towards peaceful resolution, wherever there is conflict.

(Prof.) Donal Buggy,

President, College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland.
