CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP TRAINING IN IRELAND

Are you an ambitious doctor seeking advanced training in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care or Pain Medicine?

Our International Clinical Fellowship Programme (ICFP) offers clinical training to doctors from outside Ireland who are sponsored by their government, hospital or national training body.

We offer Fellowship training in:

  • Paediatric Anaesthesia
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia
  • Regional Anaesthesia
  • Intensive Care Medicine
  • Thoracic / Airways Management

The ICFP offers a unique opportunity to develop professionally as a doctor and learn advanced skills that will be especially beneficial for the health service in your home country.

The programme is offered over one or two years of clinical training, after which you are required to return to your country of origin. The ICFP is completed under the guidance of leading consultant trainers in accredited hospitals across Ireland. There is an emphasis on acquiring expertise in techniques and subspecialties for which there is limited, or no, training in your home country.

The programme has been developed in conjunction with postgraduate medical training bodies in Ireland with the support of the Health Service Executive National Doctors Training and Planning (HSE NDTP).

On completion of the ICFP, you will be awarded with a Certificate of Clinical Fellowship Training by the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland.

EXAMINATIONS

Our examinations are internationally recognised benchmarks of excellence, valued by healthcare employers worldwide

We offer a range of postgraduate examinations to help doctors develop their skills and demonstrate competency in Anaesthesia. Intensive Care and Pain Medicine.

Membership of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland

Membership of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland of Ireland (MCAI) is an internationally recognised benchmark of excellence, valued by healthcare employers worldwide.

MCAI is achieved through examination. MCAI is accredited by the Medical Council of Ireland as the foremost knowledge-based assessment for Anaesthesia in Ireland and an essential component of specialist training in Ireland.

If you’ve chosen Anaesthesia as a career path you need expert knowledge of basic sciences. The qualification of MCAI shows potential employers that you have advanced knowledge of basic sciences including clinical measurement, physiology and pharmacology science.

In Ireland, achieving MCAI means you are ready to progress on the Specialist Anaesthetist Training pathway to the final stage of training before independent practice.

MCAI is

  • rigorously reviewed and quality assured against international standards of clinical excellence
  • approved by the Medical Council of Ireland as the foremost knowledge-based assessment for Anaesthesia in Ireland
  • an essential component of specialist training in Ireland
  • mapped to the curriculum for Specialist Anaesthetic Training years 1-2 in Ireland (SAT training programme is 6 years in duration)
  • highly relevant to the practise of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine – questions keep pace with the latest medical developments.

Quality assured against international standards

It takes immense dedication and clinical acumen to reach the standard required to achieve MCAI. There’s a lot at stake and you need to have faith in the delivery and grading of your exams.

We go to great lengths to ensure our exams are fairly and consistently marked. Each question is carefully reviewed and assessed for difficulty.

Our examiners are experienced clinicians who have met strict eligibility criteria. Before an examiner can assess candidates at the MCAI OSCE/ SOE, they are required to complete specialist training by the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland. They are trained to mark candidates fairly and objectively.

We are committed to continuously reviewing the format and delivery of our exams to ensure they are aligned with international best practice.
