Guidance from the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland Relating to Desflurane. We all have a responsibility to urgently address the climate and biodiversity crises, particularly in the developed world as we are the main cause of both. The College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland are mindful of the position taken by our colleagues in the Association of Anaesthetists and the Royal College of Anaesthetists to support the decommissioning of desflurane in the NHS. This is based upon their assessment that there are clinically safe, more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternatives. The College of

The College is proud that, through the efforts of members of its Sustainability Committee, Ireland is the first country to publish direct determination of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) of inhaled anaesthetic agents at a national level. Dr Tim Keady and colleagues estimated that in 2019, total emissions from inhaled anaesthetic agents used across all public hospitals and the majority of private hospitals amounted to 17 865 tonnes CO2e or ∼0.03% of the total Irish emissions in 2019 (∼59 000 000 tonnes CO2e). The vast majority of emissions (84% or 15 047

The Sustainability Committee of the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland, Cyclist.ie and Irish Doctors for the Environment have come together to recognise the best Irish public hospital for their commitment to active travel. A complex transport network is needed to move goods, staff and patients in healthcare. There is a significant carbon footprint associated with this. Personal travel accounts for approximately 10% of the carbon footprint in some healthcare settings (1).  By encouraging active transport, we are not only reducing emissions but also improving the cardiorespiratory health of the communities in

The International Academy of Colleges of Anaesthesiologists (IACA) hosted another IACA webinar on Wednesday, 8 June at 10am Irish time, focusing on the future of environmental sustainability in anaesthesia and pain medicine. The webinar featured guest speakers and panel members from around the globe, including local representatives from the CAI Sustainability Committee. We heard from new fellows and trainees working hard to create lasting changes within their workplaces and communities. The webinar featured a panel discussion and live Q&A. We are plotting a path towards more sustainable practice in our specialty. The environmental impact associated with the production, distribution and ultimate disposal of the journals we receive is not so trivial that it may be ignored. Please consider the following: an average person in industrialised country uses up to 300kg of paper per year; to manufacture a kilogram of paper requires two to three kilograms of wood and about 15 litres of water and finally, the majority of global paper production is not from recycled sources. The British Journal of Anaesthesia
